LIAR OF THE WEEK: The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) on Recidivism

By Cheri Roberts of Challenging the Rhetoric and Cheri Speak

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) put out their biannual report on former Guantanamo Bay detainees. Many detainees who were rounded up or otherwise captured and then held for outrageous amounts of time and then finally released without ever being charged are being documented as “recidivists” by the ODNI. You can read the document, titled, Summary of the Reengagement of Detainees Formerly Held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba HERE.

The problem with the label is the label’s legal definition. It is simply completely inaccurate in some of these cases and for the record, be corrected. Recidivism is labeling someone as not only a re-peat offender, but a probable one. Of what offense were the ones in question charged?

To get more into the meat of what this is all about, journalist and GTMO expert, Jason Leopold, wrote and incredible article on this issue for VICE, HERE.

The federal government and its many arms has an obligation of truth to the People, us people. Regardless of sympathies anyone may or may not have towards the plight of detainees rounded up after September 11, 2001, we do need to care about how the government documents things. We cannot pick and choose which lies matter and still cry for accountability and transparency. We cannot arbitrarily go about our lives over-looking the details that can someday be details used against you.
