In a Wednesday detention hearing, Oregon Standoff’s “last man out”, David Fry, was once again denied pre-trial release on a federal conspiracy charge. Prosecutors successfully argued Fry was both a flight risk and a danger to the community and U.S. District Court Judge Robert Jones agreed. This was Fry’s third detention hearing.
To the dismay of many reading about it after the fact, and to many who were present in the courtroom, during the course of Fry’s hearing, which lasted approximately 30-35 minutes, Judge Jones revealed that Fry wished to be “reincarnated as a woman”.
Fry initially contended that he simply felt that being a woman would be easier, but in a surprise recorded call from Inverness County Jail and uploaded to Fry’s Defend Your Base YouTube account, Fry reluctantly admitted to the world that he suffers from gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder (GID). Fry said that he believes the judge has put him in greater harms way by making the public disclosure; adding he and his attorney, Per Olson, specifically asked the judge not to do so citing doctor/patient confidentiality.
It seems quite an egregious mistake from the judge in light of Fry’s well on record fears of being raped while detained.
In an attempt at clearing the air Fry, talking about his gender dysphoria publicly for the first time, said,
“So, one of the things, I guess, About David Fry you should know I guess, at this point now, because it’s all weird, is that yes, I suffer, I suffer from gender dysphoria. And so I’ve had to fight with that for eleven years and it’s just something that’s weird. I don’t know. I don’t know what to do with it. You can’t just pump me full of meds and try to cure that. That’s what the whole mental hospital thing was about. They just tried to pump me full of meds and I didn’t agree. I didn’t want anything to do with that. So, that’s another thing. How you gonna, how you gonna treat things like that? It’s just … it’s a mess, so I guess to explain it fully will be, will take a little bit more time than I have here.”
Wiki’s description for Fry’s disorder is,
“Gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder (GID) is the dysphoria (distress) a person experiences as a result of the sex and gender they were assigned at birth. Evidence suggests that people who identify with a gender different from the one they were assigned at birth may do so not just due to psychological or behavioral causes, but also biological ones related to their genetics, the makeup of their brains, or exposure to hormones before birth.“
Although Fry himself would probably prefer Huffington Post’s version using a sci-fi young adult movie plot as an explainer.
Trying to fit in some explanation in before his call ended, Fry noted there were spiritual and physical causes of his dysphoria, including the 1970’s introduction of a chemical called ATRAZINE, which he believes is a “major factor”.
According to the National Institute of Health (NIH),
“The herbicide atrazine is one of the most commonly applied pesticides in the world. As a result, atrazine is the most commonly detected pesticide contaminant of ground, surface, and drinking water. Atrazine is also a potent endocrine disruptor that is active at low, ecologically relevant concentrations. Previous studies showed that atrazine adversely affects amphibian larval development. The present study demonstrates the reproductive consequences of atrazine exposure in adult amphibians. Atrazine-exposed males were both demasculinized (chemically castrated) and completely feminized as adults. Ten percent of the exposed genetic males developed into functional females that copulated with unexposed males and produced viable eggs. Atrazine-exposed males suffered from depressed testosterone, decreased breeding gland size, demasculinized/feminized laryngeal development, suppressed mating behavior, reduced spermatogenesis, and decreased fertility. These data are consistent with effects of atrazine observed in other vertebrate classes. The present findings exemplify the role that atrazine and other endocrine-disrupting pesticides likely play in global amphibian declines.”
Many reports since Fry’s arrest have included claims that he once broke out of a mental facility after being diagnosed with “schizophrenia”. In the call, Fry said it was his father who had called the “mental board” who then placed him on a 72-hour hold against his will where he was diagnosed with,
” … some crazy manic depression, or some shit.”
Addressing suicidal concerns, Fry reminded listeners,
“The scary thing is, gender dysphorics suffer a higher rate of suicide, yanno? Speaking of suicide, right? So, why would I wanna take any meds that would increase the chance of suicide. So, of course, I rightfully, you know, declined the meds and they tried to force medicate me. So I ran away from the mental hospital. And that’s what Jones is using against me. I ran away from the hospital because I didn’t wanna be force medicated.”
There has been much concern about Fry’s mental health over the months. In a livestreams in the final days of the final four who were holed up at Malheur, Fry expressed many times he would rather die than be incarcerated. In the final hours before his peaceful surrender that thankfully ended in relieved “Hallelujahs” voiced across the country, Fry had said he was feeling suicidal.
Fry says his belief in things like reincarnation and alien life are protected under his first amendment right and that these beliefs should not be judged to be a mental disorder.
In a quiet voice, after a mini anti-government rant, Fry ended the call with,
“All in all, I was just trying to make the world a better place. Hallelujah and Yah bless.”
